Now live: social features, file formats, better workflow

Transifex received today a nifty update with a number of new features and UX improvements. Without further ado, here are the highlights.

Your own translation social network

A new section on Transifex called ‘Connect’ makes your experience more social and allows you to engage with other members of the community. Developers can find popular translators or search for a specific specialty with tags. Translators, on the other hand, can find popular projects or locate the ones they’re interested in and request to join their teams.

Recommend the work of great folks

Let’s say you worked with a translator and you loved his work. Or you’re a translator and have been thrilled with your collaboration with a project maintainer.

You can now recommend them to others, a la LinkedIn. Navigate to the user’s profile and hit the Recommend button. Your recommendation will be visible on the person’s public profile by everyone, once he approves it. Use recommendations to build up your reputation and get more and better translation jobs in the future.

New file formats: HTML, PHP, Java Unicode

New formats natively supported include HTML (in addition to XHTML), more PHP syntax styles, .wiki of Wikipedia fame, and Unicode Java Properties (also known as Mozilla .properties). Check all 20 formats out on our list of supported file formats.

<?php
/** PHP, yay! **/

$LANG = array(
    "january"   => "enero",
    "february"  => "febrero",
);

$LANG['_MONDAY'] = "Monday";
$LANG["_TUESDAY"] = 'Tuesday';

DEFINE("march", "marzo");
DEFINE("april", "abril");
?>

Resource categories

Some projects hold a big number of resources and a way was needed to group them together. You can now mount the resource under arbitrary categories when you edit the resource. This grouping will show up in all the statistics tables and is also accessible via our API.

Locate your entities in the web editor

The web editor provides a handy search box which helps you filter the entities or simply search for a specific string. You can now search by date and context using the following keywords:

file
Search in the occurencies/location (file:mypage.html)
before & after
Search for strings updated before or after a given date.
(after:2012-01-01 & before:2012-01-02)

New layout on project pages

The project pages now show an overall view of your project’s translation progress. The resources list was moved to its own page, holding all the maintainer-related technical bits on uploading new files. Each language page now shows all the resources this team is responsible for.

Webhook for automatic notification of events

Transifex allows you to specify a web hook (HTTP callback) for the translations of your project. This way, you can get notified whenever the translation of a resource is modified. This opens many possibilities for the maintainers of the project, like pulling translations as soon as they are completed. To use this feature, you have to add a URL for the project. This URL should expect a POST request with the following variables, JSON-formatted:

  • project : The slug of the project
  • resource: The slug of the resource
  • language: The language code of the translation that was modified.
  • percent : An integer that represents the rate of translation for the particular resource in the particular language.

New user account and profile pages

We now support authentication through 3rd-party services (Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, Facebook) and a super-nice new Profile Edit page. While the custom avatar cropping has been removed, the avatars are still supported through Gravatar.

Tag assignment

The UI for assigning tags to your projects has been greatly enhanced, showing you tags related to the ones you selected and suggesting you new ones to use.

More features

In the following days, we will follow up this announcement with blog posts that will demonstrate and explain the coolest features we introduce that will boost your translations’ quality and management. Here are some of them. Stay tuned!
